RAMBLINGS
So.
I don’t even know where to begin.
This blog is going to be a regular part of the JDK world, documenting and showcasing behind the scenes aspects of the work that goes in to produce some of these incredible images and give a general glimpse into the not so glamorous life of a photographer. But for this particular post, I don’t even know where to start. So much has happened in the last month, so many changes. Some good, some not quite as good, all helping me grow and mature and learn. But this is the first time I’ve really had a chance to get thoughts out there, which means this post could be all over the place, but bear with me cause there are cool photos all the way through to distract you from my ramblings :)
The last 511 days, I have been living in the US as many are probably aware of. The last three months of this was spent on a tourist visa, travelling, shooting and enjoying myself. Most time was spent in South Lake Tahoe, where I had worked on skifields and marinas in one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Something so different and rimmed with such immense natural features is foreign to me, but after spending the time learning about the region and making friends and exploring, I now feel like I have two homes in two very different, but very similar, parts of the world.
Time was spent in Santa Cruz (this was my ocean home away from home and the closest beach I could get to) and also on the east coast with my aunt in New Jersey, travelling to Washington and Philadelphia.
Snowboarding made up most of my outdoor time, and I now love the snow industry, and plan to spend much more time associated with it in the future. Especially when my friends can shred so well and are more than happy to put their bodies on the line to shoot with me.
Between all this and getting my ass fit again (still very high on my priority list, turns out heavy carb-loaded comfort food doesn’t agree with my body when it’s eaten for 17 months straight in cold environments with little exercise), my focus turned to creating and organising the back end of JDK, in order to make a much more streamlined and business orientated venture. Hours and hours of editing, design, marketing plans, ROI outlines, target market segmentation, web browser optimisation and other tedious but necessary projects were done to really hit the ground running, and to deliver a beautiful end product to clients doing something I love.
I am happy to be home, it’s the same as it was, but different in many ways. I feel like I’m home, but I also feel like I have kind of just left my home on another journey. I love the ocean and I’ve missed tasting like salt and getting up and going surfing, and my family and my dog (ESPECIALLY my dog) but i also miss cold weather, and snow through my hair and fresh powder. I miss mountains and rivers and lakes, just as much as I missed the surf and the sunshine and the warmth.
As always, please feel free to reach out, let me know of ideas that are going around in your head, potential collaborations, shoot locations, tell me your stories or just say hi! And keep a look out for new, exciting images and plans with JDK over the next six months - we’re going to make this BIG.
Peace,
Josh.
